Jake Paul vs Andre August

Jake “the Problem Child” Paul(7-1, 4KOs) is changing his career trajectory and fighting the relatively unknown Houstonian, Andre “Silverback” August (10-1-1, 5KOs) for 8 rounds at the cruiserweight limit of 200 lbs this Friday on DAZN.

The general public is well aware of the atypical fashion in which Jake Paul started his boxing career. Ex-MMA stars, NBA players and influencers make up the majority of his fights so far. That said, in fairness it should be stated that Paul does deserve at least some credit for defeating Anderson Silva, a retired MMA great, who had already been boxing and even defeated former champion Julio Cesar Chavez jr in a boxing match just one year earlier. He also gave a good fight and honest effort, albeit a losing one, against a fun hybrid of professional boxer and U.K influencer, Tommy Fury. Now coming off of a win over mma star Nate Diaz, he’s decided to change course and go for a fight more typical of someone with a professional record of 7-1. This one is not so much about fortune and fanfare. It’s about sharpening his skills against a real boxer, and begin making his case for a legitimate run at a title, according to recent interviews. Regardless of how you feel about Paul, his career thus far, or his ability to make it to the pinnacle of the sport with such a late start, his intentions appear to be earnest.

Andre August is a professional boxer from Beaumont, TX, now residing in Houston. His career began in 2013 and stayed relatively active through November of 2019, accruing a record of 9-1-1, with most of his bouts being in the general area of the light heavyweight limit of 175 lbs. At that point he took a break from pugilism to spend more time with his children and make a run at a steady paycheck. In August of this year he made his return to the ring, this time closer to the cruiserweight limit of 200 lbs, and successfully defeated the previously unbeaten Brandon Martin.

It’s not entirely clear what put August on Paul’s radar. Andre does not have a huge public profile, and prefers action over discourse, but alas this will be Jake’s first opponent that didn’t have a name outside of boxing, as well as his first opponent with more knockouts than Paul himself. This fight will mark a new chapter in both of these men’s lives and careers, and that alone is going to be worth the watch.
