Canelo Alvarez vs Christian Mbilli Breakdown
In defiance of recent terrorist attacks and in many ways common sense, Riyadh's Mexico vs the World card featuring Canelo Alvarez vs Christian Mbilli for Mbilli's WBC World title as the headliner, moves forward as planned for Saturday Oct 31st.
Citizen of Mexico and superstar of the world, Canelo Alvarez, is finally making his return to the ring after his unanimous decision loss to Terrence Bud Crawford just over a year ago. As is his nature, and his privilege, Canelo is going straight for a WBC world title at super middleweight, the weight class over which he once reigned. The current holder of the WBC strap is Cameroonian/French/Canadian Christian Mbilli.
Mbilli has been catching the eye of boxing fans for the last few years by being an all-action offensive machine that not only goes for the knockout every chance he gets, but is successful much more often than not. He won the interim WBC title over Maciej Sulecki in June of 2025, retained the interim title through a controversial draw on the Canelo-Crawford undercard. Though he was elevated to full champion when Crawford retired, like Canelo himself, Mbilli has not fought since.
It's not just the title and the piles of Saudi Arabian money that likely appeals to Canelo. The fact that Mbilli is young, aggressive, talented and presents an actual challenge means that the aging Mexican star can prove to the world that he's still "got it" after being more or less shut down by Crawford, and taking all that time off. It's generally accepted that Mbilli has a style that would be perfect for a prime Canelo to beat handily. The question for fans, and likely Canelo himself, is whether at this point in his career the youth and the punching power of Mbilli will be enough to make a difference and overcome the future legend.
Canelo Alvarez vs Christian Mbilli Undercard Breakdown
As the title of the card suggests, there will be other Mexicans there to face opponents from all over the world, with varying degrees of assuredness in their success.
WBA super middleweight world champion, Jaime Munguia faces a hard hitting little-known Russian Nikita Zon. Munguia goes into this match-up the favorite and after looking the best he's ever looked in his last fight with Resendiz, that's no surprise. That said, Zon's power appears real and the Russian getting to Munguia is in no way out of the question. After some delay with sanctioning the bout, the WBA have given the okay for calling this fight an official title defense.
Unfortunately due to travel being last minute and dangerous, Lindolfo Delgado pulled out of his scheduled fight with Arthur Biyarslanov for the vacant IBF super lightweight title. Disappointing but completely understandable.
All is not lost as rising star and reigning WBO World Featherweight Champion Rafael Espinoza is still on the card, albeit against a different opponent than was originally planned. His opponent had been slated as being the WBO #1 challenger Lorenzo Parra, but due to "medical complications" he was replaced by WBO #15 Ricardo Blandon. Since the circumstances fell soundly into the "extenuating" category, the WBO ruled that this will go on as an official defense. Regardless of opponent, Espinoza is exciting and must-watch, it's just less exciting now that he's a heavier favorite.
David Picasso faces Carl Martin in a very solid 50/50ish match-up and Reito Tsutsumi is always welcome on a card. Being that Tsutsumi is Japanese he is of course facing a Mexican by the name of Raymundo Rojas Garcia. More bouts are also scheduled for the prelims.
All-in-all, assuming the card goes on as scheduled and remains in its current state, it should be a fun day of boxing and worthy of tuning in to. If one were to ask me, it would've been even more fun, safer, and make a lot more sense to have a "Mexico vs the World" card take place in Mexico, but as of this article being written no-one from any organization whatsoever has reached out.
