Ryan Garcia vs Luke Campbell confirmed – breakdown by Dallas Owens
After weeks of negotiations, Golden Boy and Matchroom Sports have agreed
upon terms for Ryan Garcia (20-0-0, 17KO) vs Luke Campbell (20-3-0, 16KO).
The negotiations were to go to purse-bid on Tuesday 8/12/20, but a 7-day extension was filed by Golden Boy, and granted by the WBC. It didn’t take 7 days, instead only a few extra hours, as they officially announced the bout later that day. The WBC mandated this matchup for the interim lightweight title that Devin Haney vacated when he was elevated to WBC regular champion. The time and place have yet to be announced, but it would appear that they are aiming for the month of November.
Ryan Garcia, an orthodox fighter, is looking to prove himself, yet again, in his toughest fight to date. His last 2 fights were against Romero Duno (22-2-0
17KO) and Francisco Fonseca (26-3-2, 20KO). Both contests were to be his
toughest at the time, and both ended in first-round knockouts. Garcia’s lightning-fast hands and his penchant for setting up, and knocking out, his opponents are two of the many reasons Ryan Garcia is a rising star in the sport.
Luke Campbell, a southpaw, is a former Olympic Gold Medalist. In his
professional career, he has fought for a world title twice but came up short on both occasions. Once against future Hall Of Fame candidate and P4P top 5, Vasyl Lomachenko(14-1-0, 10KO), and once against Jorge Linares (47-5-0, 29KO), a former champion in three weight classes. Though these were losses, both of the events showed Campbell has a probing jab, a high boxing IQ, and a level of tenacity that can give even the very best, a hard fight.
