Vergil Ortiz Jr vs Serhii Bohachuk

In a super welterweight clash, Serhii Bohachuk will defend his WBC interim world title against rising star Vergil Ortiz jr with the winner shoring up his position at the front of the line for the full title, currently held, along with the WBO, by Sebastian Fundora. 

Vergil Ortiz Jr’s welterweight career was coming along swimmingly, but due to injury and ailments, his promised secondary title bout with Eimontes Stanionis was put aside, and Ortiz ended up not fighting at all in 2023. Cut to 2024 when he moved up to super welterweight for his health, and has already walked through two opponents. When you add both bouts together his ring time this year is 5 minutes 12 seconds. Not quite enough to see what he’s capable of at the weight, but plenty to see he carries his power and volume up with him. Though becoming a champion at welter seemed all but a matter of time, his being a top-dog at 154 has already been made apparent. Having never lost, and winning every fight by knockout, the world seems to be Ortiz’s oyster. With a few high profile champions and ex-champion’s to choose from, such as Tim Tszyu and now including Bud Crawford, it’s at this point in his career where we will really see what the young Texan is capable of, and the heights he will be able to reach. There is just one man standing between him and a world of oppurtunity, fellow knockout artist, Serhii Bohachuk.

Serhii Bohachuk has almost reached “boogyman” status at 154 lbs, almost. Winning 23 of 25 bouts by knockout will do that to a person. Bohuchuk has only heard the final bell once, and it was his most recent outing with Brian Mendoza, a man no person on earth has knocked out on the professional stage. Though coming short of a knockout, Bohachuk did show his class and ability against a very skillful, heavy handed, and game opponent. Serhii has shown a small gap in his armor, having been knocked out by Brandon Adams over three years ago, a fight in which he was up on all three cards. But since that lone defeat, El Flaco has been on a 6 fight win streak with no plans of stopping. He has the strength, the skill, and the ability to reach the very top of his division, but what he lacks is recognition. Vergil Ortiz jr gives Bohachuk not only his toughest fight to date, but also the chance to show the world just who he is, and what he can accomplish. 

Dallas’ Opinion: This is a great fight and a potential banana peel for Ortiz, who has his eyes set on the higher eschelons. A Bohachuk win would not be surprising. He has the power, the jab, and the ability to cut off the ring, to put Ortiz in bad positions he has yet to really find himself in. That said, I expect Ortiz to best the Ukrainian with his overwhelming volume and renowned power finding the same button Adams did years ago.
