Callum Walsh vs Carlos Ocampo Breakdown
Zuffa makes their true boxing debut in the big fight capital, Las Vegas, Nevada. Counter to expectations of grandiosity for their inaugural card, it will be held in the Meta Apex, a venue thus far only utilized for smaller audiences during covid and later for lesser UFC fight nights. Top 20 super-welterweight Callum Walsh will headline, facing known quantity Carlos Ocampo.
Callum Walsh is best known for his recent win over Fernando Vargas jr at the Canelo vs Crawford event, and his relationship to Dana White. Carlos Ocampo is best known for his losses to Spence jr, Fundora, and Tim Tszyu, though has proven himself a worthy competitor with undeniable power. A win for either wouldn't necessarily bring them closer to a world title, but with Zuffa eventually introducing their own championship belts, it will very likely bring the winner closer to that one at least.
The slow-play for their introduction to yet another fight sport is understandable, and likely the intelligent way to go. Coming in with a bang, throwing money hither and yon, has been the downfall of many ambitious boxing promotions before them. Their attempt to dismantle the current way of things and erect a monopolous behemoth of all things fight-sports will not be done over night. What's more, their full plan cannot come to fruition until the current fighter-protection laws in the united states have been changed in favor of business over boxers. Once that domino has inevitably fallen, we will then get a true glimpse at what is to come in the name of effeciency. Until then, smaller cards with relatively good match-ups of lesser known boxers, headlined by the Callum Walshes of the world will be used as Zuffa's howdy-do.
The card will be broadcast for no extra cost on Paramount+ which will make it the most accessible boxing for fans in the US. That, at the very least, is a pretty good thing.
